Overview

The Graduate School of Education aims to facilitate research into theory concerning education and its application, to train educators who possess outstanding practical leadership abilities, and to contribute to the development of the culture of education. Its structure is made up of four major subjects: Advanced Professional Development in School Education (Professional School for Teacher Education), Special Support Education, Curriculum Development, and Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology. Each of these major subjects is further divided into specializations and courses as described below, providing high-quality specialized education.

Advanced Professional Development in School Education (Professional School for Teacher Education)

Advanced Professional Development in School Education (Professional School for Teacher Education) consists of two courses: the Leadership Development Course, and the Practical Education Development Course. The Professional School for Teacher Education develops leadership skills that benefit from the wisdom of researcher-instructors, instructors with career experience in their subject areas, and partner schools. In doing so, it comprehensively supports each student in improving their skills and career outlook. Students who complete this program will be awarded a professional school master's degree in Education.

Special Support Education

The Special Support Education program consists of two courses: Special Support School Education Course (Two-year Master's Program)and Special Support Coordinator Education Course (One-year Master's Program). The Special Support School Education Course trains highly skilled professionals who are able to respond to the needs of the infants, preschool children, and school children who learn at special support schools and in special support classes. The Special Support Coordinator Education Course is specifically developed to train special support coordinator who have the ability to respond to the needs of infants, preschool children, and school children who require special support while attending general education schools.

Curriculum Development

Curriculum Development consists of four courses: the Civilization and Social Sciences Course, the Natural Sciences Course, the Life and Health Sciences Course, and the Arts Course. The purpose of this program is to develop leaders with practical abilities and the potential to become pioneers in education research in the places where teaching is done, as each student deepens their awareness of the issues through a curriculum focused on practical content, with small class sizes.

Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology

Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology consists of two courses: the School Pedagogy Course, and the Clinical Psychology Course. Both are built upon a foundation of the disposition and skills cultivated in undergraduate courses, and serve to develop the ability to conceive and implement strategies for dealing with the many issues that surround Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology today. Studying in this subject will enable students to acquire more specialized knowledge and skills, and become professionals with the ability to actively contribute to society.

History

The Ehime University Graduate School of Education (master's program) was established in April of 1993, and originally consisted of two major subjects: School Education, and Curriculum Development. In the 2004 academic year, Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology, which trains professionals of the mind, was launched as a separate major subject. Additionally, in the 2005 academic year, Special Support Education was established in order to meet societal and local needs relating to the development of specialists in Special Support Education. This major consists of two specializations: the Special Needs School Teacher Specialization, and the Special Support Education Coordinator Specialization, which is a one-year specialization course that aims to train professionals in the support of persons with mild developmental disorders, including learning disabilities, ADHD, and high-functioning autism. In the 2016 academic year, the School Education major was discontinued, and the Advanced Professional Development in School Education (Professional School for Teacher Education) major was newly added. The Graduate School now consists of four major subjects: Advanced Professional Development in School Education (Professional School for Teacher Education), Special Support Education, Curriculum Development, and Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology.
With the goal of training educators who possess outstanding expertise, in its history to this point, the Graduate School has pursued a variety of innovations that have responded to the needs of places of education, while remaining grounded in the process of educational reform that has been promoted by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.

The Graduate School of Education's mission is to contribute to society by producing the outstanding practitioners who are at the heart of education. The Graduate School consists of four major subjects: Advanced Professional Development in School Education (Professional School for Teacher Education), Curriculum Development, Special Support Education, and Clinical Studies of Education and Psychology. The Graduate School ensures that its students benefit from a curriculum that is grounded in the disposition and skills cultivated in undergraduate programs, and which emphasizes the relationships between local communities and their educational institutions, as well as studies that facilitate mutual respect and edification. In doing so, it nurtures professionals who combine outstanding practical educational skills with rich humanistic sensibilities.

  1. As it relates to education and their areas of specialization, students will possess knowledge, practical skills, and research methods consistent with having graduated from a bachelor's degree program. (Knowledge, understanding, skills)
  2. Regarding the issues that surround modern education, on the basis of specialized knowledge, students will have the ability to think systematically and comprehensively about these issues, as well as the ability to accurately explain that process and its results. (Thinking, judgment, expression)
  3. Students will have a clear awareness, grounded in the education-related needs of society, of what their research tasks and subjects of study are, as well as the desire to make efforts as teachers in these areas. Students will make a voluntary effort to contribute to society.(Interest, ambition, disposition)

Regarding the many issues that surround modern education, on the basis of wide-ranging expert knowledge, students will have the ability to appropriately consider strategies for dealing with these issues, and to bring outstanding practical skills to their efforts in education.   4. Students will possess a clear awareness of the educational needs of society as well as their own learning tasks and areas of research. As professionals with high-level practical educational skills for advanced learning and research and the ability to consider how their knowledge can be put into practice, they will be cognizant of their duties and responsibilities, and will make a voluntary effort to contribute to society.
